Darnold’s WR mate from USC wants to be a Jet

- MANISH MEHTA

MOBILE, Ala — Joe Douglas’ charge to bring the Jets’ offense back from extinction means finding the right pieces to turn Sam Darnold into a consistent difference maker. For all the required upgrades in the trenches, Darnold needs more skill-position weaponry.

Only three teams featured a worse passing offense this season. Darnold isn’t Superman. He needs help. So, it’ll be incumbent upon Douglas to add at least one wide receiver to this offense to breathe life into the unit.

Will Gang Green break the bank for in-house free agent Robby Anderson or does it make more fiscal sense to pick from one of the deepest receiver draft classes in years?

The loaded group of wideouts could include as many as six first rounders. But the quality hardly stops after the first day. Some NFL personnel people believe there might be a dozen or so legitimate players at the position this season.

Michael Pittman Jr., who knows the centerpiece of the Jets universe pretty well, is among them. The USC wideout was Darnold’s teammate for two seasons. Pittman would like to be Darnold’s teammate for much longer.

“Sammy D. was one of the best quarterbacks that I’ve ever played with,” Pittman said Tuesday before his first Senior Bowl practice. “He’s just a straight gamer. He’s a young quarterback, who has 10-15 years left. So, it would be nice to have that run with him.”

The Jets have plenty of question marks at the position beyond Jamison Crowder. There’s a sense that Anderson, who will test the market, is a goner unless Douglas & Co. reverse course and become the highest bidder. Quincy Enunwa, who missed this season with a neck injury suffered in Week 1, appears to be a long-shot to be back on the field.

The 6-4, 220-pound Pittman isn’t on the receiver marquee for this draft class, but his size, toughness, quality hands and penchant for winning 50-50 balls is enticing. Pittman, whose father was a NFL running back
