Prez crows as Sessions faces runoff

- BY DAVE GOLDINER

Burying the hatchet is just not in President Trump’s wheelhouse.

The grudge holder-in-chief trashed Jeff Sessions Wednesday after the former attorney general was forced into a Republican runoff for his old Senate seat in Alabama.

Trump still angrily blames Sessions (inset bottom) for not shutting down the investigation into his campaign’s alleged collusion with Russia in the 2016 presidential election.

“This is what happens to someone who … doesn’t have the wisdom or courage to stare down & end the phony Russia Witch Hunt,” Trump tweeted.

The president was referring to the hard-fought Republican primary battle between Sessions and Tom Tuberville, a former Auburn University football coach.

Tuberville narrowly won the vote by a 33% to 31% margin, setting up a GOP runoff in May. Rep. Bradley Byrne finished third with about 25% of the vote, and Judge Roy Moore finished far back with just 6%.

The winner will seek to unseat Sen. Doug Jones, a Democrat who won an unlikely victory over Moore in a 2017 special election after Sessions was named attorney general by Trump.

Sessions, a legend in Alabama politics, should have been a shoo-in to win the GOP nod and retake the Senate seat that he won in the past with only token opposition.

Despite the epic feud with Trump, Sessions sought to embrace the president and vowed to be a loyal lieutenant in the #MAGA army.

For now, Republicans are still confident the intramural squabble will not stop them from beating Jones in November. Despite the splits, Alabama remains one of the nation’s reddest states, a place where Trump is extremely popular.
