Coronavirus no joke, even for ‘Weird Al’
“My Corona” will not become an entry in the “Weird Al” Yankovic songbook anytime soon.
The 60-year-old satirist behind such humorous hits as “Amish Paradise,” “Like a Surgeon” and “Trapped in the DriveThru” tweeted that he will not be penning a parody involving the deadly coronavirus.
“Yeah, no, sorry. Not gonna do ‘My Corona,’” Yankovic wrote Tuesday on Twitter.
One of Yankovic’s earliest farcical tunes was “My Bologna,” a 1983 sendup of The Knack’s No. 1 hit from four years earlier, “My Sharona.”
Needless to say, some fans were disappointed by Yankovic’s decision.
“That’s too bad. It would go viral,” snarked Twitter user Darla Moore, while BadDude.SimoHayha quipped, “That song would be infectious!!!”
But many people commended Yankovic for not poking fun at such a serious topic.
“A lot of people had the reaction of ‘Weird Al’ should do ‘My Corona,’ but Al knows when the right move is to not do a thing,” wrote Twitter user Chromigula.
During his four-decade career, Yankovic has never been afraid to make light of serious topics. “Fat,” his ode to obesity, was a spoof of Michael Jackson’s “Bad,” and “I Want a New Duck” humorously tweaked the Huey Lewis and the News classic “I Want a New Drug.”
Nine coronavirus deaths in the U.S. were confirmed as of Tuesday, reported The Associated Press.
Most have occurred at a Seattle-area nursing home.
At least 15 states have reported at least one coronavirus infection, according to the AP.
