Report: Sale to avoid Tommy John surgery

AP

-

Boston Red Sox starter Chris Sale has soreness in his throwing elbow and has undergone an MRI, the team announced two days after the 30-year-old lefthander faced batters for the first time this spring.

Sale is not expected to undergo Tommy John surgery, a source confirmed to ESPN.

Manager Ron Roenicke said Sale felt the soreness in his elbow Monday morning, the day after his 18-pitch batting practice session. Team doctors reviewed the MRI results and sent them to Dr. James Andrews.

CURRY BACK TONIGHT

Stephen Curry is scheduled to return from a more than four-month absence with a broken left hand to play for Golden State against the Toronto Raptors tonight.

The Warriors announced Wednesday night that Curry had been medically cleared to play and would be in the lineup in a rematch of last year's NBA Finals, won in six games by Toronto. The twotime NBA MVP missed 58 games after falling on his left hand Oct. 30 against Phoenix.

He practiced Monday with the G League Santa Cruz Warriors, then was recalled back to the NBA team later in the day.

Curry, who turns 32 on March 14, had hoped to return last Sunday against Washington, but his timeline wasn't too far delayed. He is averaging 20.3 points, 6.5 assists and 5.0 rebounds over just four games this season.

GAMBLER CHARGED WITH THREATS

A New York sports gambler is facing federal charges in Florida related to threatening social media messages sent to players with the Tampa Bay Rays and other teams, federal authorities said Wednesday.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Tampa announced a charge of transmitting threats in interstate or foreign commerce against Benjamin Tucker Patz, 23. He faces up to five years in federal prison.

Patz made numerous violent threats last year against athletes and their family members through anonymous Instagram accounts, according to a criminal complaint. In many messages, Patz threatened to enter the athletes' homes and behead them or their family members, the FBI said. Some of Patz's threats also contained derogatory terms and racial slurs, investigators said.

The Rays lost a home game last July to the White Sox. An account linked to Patz later sent threatening Instagram messages to four players for the Rays and one player for the White Sox, according to authorities. None of the players were identified by name, only initials.
