SPREAD DREAD GROWS IN CITY
Mayor de Blasio isn’t going to stop campaigning for Sen. Bernie Sanders just because a deadly pandemic has reached New York City.
Since people in the Big Apple started being tested for the coronavirus, Hizzoner has mingled his political agenda with public health updates on cable news interviews and his Twitter feed.
The topics came together in a Thursday morning tweet in which de Blasio wrote: “The Coronavirus is further evidence why we need #MedicareForAll. Expect more new, challenging diseases in a globalized world.
“Only if people can get healthcare easily will we be able to stay ahead of things,” he continued. “Our current system won’t cut it. We need change NOW: @BernieSanders.”
De Blasio has used TV spots to breathlessly go from the coronavirus situation to Sanders’ presidential run. In an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Thursday, he started off by giving an updated toll of confirmed virus cases, then launched into an attack on Joe Biden.
Councilman Joe Borelli (R-S.I.) praised the city’s response to the coronavirus, but implored the mayor to stay focused.
“Please, Mr. Mayor, focus on coronavirus and stop mixing politics,” Borelli told the Daily News.
De Blasio took a testy tone when asked Thursday about concerns he’s politicizing a public health crisis.
“Oh, please,” he said. “Don’t even try.”
Pressed on the matter, he fumed, “We are constantly acting on coronavirus.
“Meanwhile, an election is happening that’s going to determine the fate of the nation and the fate of New York City,” he continued. “I’m sorry: we do not suspend elections in the middle of crises.”
De Blasio endorsed Sanders for president last month.
