Stanton ramps up his rehab
Giancarlo Stanton has been doing cardio during his rehab from a strained right calf. The left fielder has been working on the antigravity treadmill.
“[He] did about six miles an hour. He’s doing pretty well. Healing,” Boone said. “I would say it’s going, seems like pretty well, but we’re still only nine or 10 days out from when it happened. He has been able to ramp up his intensity here consistently. Those are all good signs.”
The 30-year-old slugger played just 18 games last season because of a long and frustrating series of injuries. He strained his left biceps the first weekend of the season. While rehabbing from that, Stanton also dealt with a strained left shoulder and then, as he was beginning to rehab he strained his left calf. He returned to play six games before he jammed his knee running bases and missed 73 games before returning in September.
And then he suffered a right quad strain during the ALCS, playing in just two games of that series that ended the Yankees season.
CHAPMAN GOOD TO GO
Aroldis Chapman finally made his Grapefruit League debut on Friday night. The Yankees closer threw a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and striking out one.
Chapman said he felt good for a first outing and only needs four or five more to be ready for the season.
SANCHEZ STRUGGLES
Catching in back-to-back games for the first time this spring, Gary Sanchez was charged with a passed ball and Deivi Garcia was charged with a wild pitch, both of which allowed runs to score. Sanchez is adjusting to his new catching stance: down on one knee, his other leg splayed out.
Perhaps more worrisome is Sanchez going 1-for-11 with four strikeouts so far this spring.
