OUR CITY, YOUR PAPER

-

No one covers the city like the Daily News. For more than a century, New York’s Hometown Newspaper has been your eyes and ears — and your voice.

Do you have a story you think we should tell? Call us at (212) 210-NEWS or email us at nydntips@nydailynews.com. This is your paper, and we are committed to covering the issues that matter to you. Here are some of our top stories from the last week:

Enraged ex: A young Bronx mom who survived a machete attack at the hands of her ex-boyfriend recounted the chilling event in an exclusive hospital interview with The News last Sunday. “Don’t let him kill me, don’t let him kill me,” 20-year-old Lisbeth Acosta (inset) said she screamed when she saw her former beau, Hector Delacruz, in her Bronx building. Acosta, who spoke from her St. Barnabas Hospital bed, said she ran to get away — but Delacruz grabbed her and sliced her face, leaving a deep gash on her right cheek. “He was never gonna change, we were in a toxic relationship, it was something abusive,” she said. “So I had to go away, because my daughter and my life mattered more than our relationship.”

Child welfare changes: Six new child protection bills were introduced in Suffolk County on Wednesday following the murder of 8-year-old Thomas Valva and a number of missteps that contributed to his death. The reforms — two of which were exclusively reported by The News — call for for greater oversight of child welfare workers and ways of handling cases involving autistic and developmentally disabled children. Prosecutors charged the autistic boy’s NYPD cop father, Michael Valva, and his fiancée, Angela Pollina, with murder in January after they allegedly left him to freeze to death in their garage. There were more than 20 allegations of abuse and neglect involving Thomas and his brothers before he died.

Corona city: New York has dozens of confirmed coronavirus cases — mostly related to a Westchester County lawyer who works in Manhattan. Thousands of people are under precautionary quarantine. Gov. Cuomo requested $40 million in emergency funds to deal with the epidemic. City and state officials have also implemented cleaning measures to combat the virus, like sanitizing 6,400 subway cars and 5,700 buses. President Trump on Friday approved $8.3 billion in coronavirus prevention and treatment.

Hero’s help: A Bronx man who rescued his neighbors from their burning building Friday morning is now fighting for his life. Josh Pizarro, 30, dashed up and down the stairs, banging on doors to try to get residents out of the 242nd St. apartment complex where the blaze erupted at about 9:15 a.m., officials said “He’s definitely a hero for today, definitely saved some lives,” said his neighbor Chip Jones, 24. “He allowed people to get out, pets to get out, elderly to get out. He even notified people up two, three floors ahead of him. It takes a whole lot of courage to do that.”
