Murder rap after decade on the lam
A gangbanger who spent a decade on the run was flown back to the city Monday to face charges for an East Harlem murder.
Kendell Scott, 27, was busted last month in Charlotte, N.C., for the Oct. 25, 2009 fatal shooting of John Williams, 19, near the Taft Houses at Madison Ave. and
115th St. Scott (inset), then 17 and known as Kendall, was with the Air It
Out gang and Williams was with a rival, the True Money Gang, a law enforcement source and published reports said.
During a confrontation with Williams and his friends Scott fired three shots, striking Williams in the head, prosecutors said at Scott’s arraignment Monday in Manhattan Supreme Court. Another victim was hit in the leg but survived. The source said Williams’ murder was linked to an argument the two gangs had over a gun.
The confrontation led to a war that raged for more than three years and involved a third gang called Whoadey. More than 30 shootings were linked to the extended beef, including the fatal shootings of two teens, the source and reports said.
Scott was identified as Williams’ killer by seven witnesses, according to the indictment.
“The defendant, after that, essentially left his home and was a fugitive in the wind for 10 years,” Assistant DA Amy Schwartz said. The NYPD searched for Scott in Texas, Canada and the Dominican Republic — and even considered Afghanistan because there was a suspicion he might have been working there as a contractor for the U.S. military.
He was finally tracked to a distant relative’s home, where he surrendered peacefully.
Scott pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and related charges and is due back in court April 14.
