The king is dead, long live the king!

Jack Gleeson, the Irish-born actor best known for portraying sadistic tyrant Joffrey Baratheon on “Game of Thrones,” is returning to TV in a new British comedy series.

Gleeson will appear in the upcoming six-episode program “Out of Her Mind,” which is being produced by Simon Pegg, Variety reported.

Following his departure from the iconic fantasy series, Gleeson (inset), now 27, stated he had retired from acting, hinting that the notoriety was too much to bear.

“Some people when they become famous, they feel better, they feel more worthy,” he told Vulture during a 2016 interview. “That’s what makes me feel really uncomfortable. I try to eschew that as much as possible.” Gleeson’s poisoning death in the 2014 episode “The Lion and the Rose” was an exceedingly excruciating demise. At his wedding reception with Margaery Tyrell, Joffrey gulps down poisoned wine.

One of the series’ most haunting images is a gasping Joffrey’s purple face with rivulets of blood streaming from each nostril.

After his “Game of Thrones” departure, Gleeson, who studied philosophy and theology at Dublin’s Trinity College, referred to the completion of the death scene as a relief, although he relished his role.

“To be able to not be yourself for five minutes, half an hour, all day — I wouldn’t say it’s therapeutic, but it’s fun to think somebody else’s thoughts, especially a character like Joffrey,” Gleeson previously has said. “It’s a nice relief to day-to-day life.”
