Huddling in their homes, even tho they may be OK

They are the worried not-sowell – or just plain worried.

An increasing number of New Yorkers, battered by the burgeoning outbreak of coronavirus, are self-monitoring their health or hunkering down at home out of concern over the spread of the highly contagious disease.

In Brianna Linwood’s case, a battery of symptoms that seem to fit the coronavirus profile are as worrisome as getting a doctor’s diagnosis. She has yet to be tested.

“I’m taking cough medicine but it’s not helping,” the 34year-old history teacher from Mount Vernon said of her cough, sore throat, and chest tightness.

“Initially I called Riverdale Family Practice, and they referred me to the ER,” said Linwood, adding that only led to a physician who referred her to the state Department of Health, which “asked have I been in contact with anyone who has the virus. Truthfully speaking, how would I know?”

Linwood, who lives alone, said she stocked up on groceries to remain in self-quarantine.

“I haven’t been out. I’m not going back to work either,” said Linwood. “I want to protect my students and myself but I also want to take a stand.”

Dez Rock, 47, who lives in New York and Melbourne, and works for a software company, said she was in bed with a fever for three days after returning to the U.S. on Feb. 21. Since then, she’s still been ill, but feels like it’s slowly resolving. She also didn’t get tested.

“The nurse was terrified,” she said of her one-and-only trip to a City MD branch on March 9. “She was up against the wall. She sterilized herself and did not touch me at all.”

For Kevin Zimmerman, 33, also in self-quarantine in Ridgewood, Queens, being uninsured and unemployed is complicating his ill health from a sore throat and fever.

“If I don’t have the coronavirus, I might get it from somebody else. If I do have it, I might spread it to somebody else,” he said.
