GIANT HOLES TO FILL Blue has yet to make

- PAT LEONARD

Through three days of free agent negotiations and signings, the Giants have not made a splash signing on the offensive line, at edge rusher, or at free safety — three positions of great need.

They’ve spent money, most notably on corner James Bradberry and Packers linebacker Blake Martinez. They took a one-year chance on the pass rush upside of Green Bay outside linebacker Kyler Fackrell.

And on Wednesday night they took a flier on former Patriots and Cowboys offensive tackle Cameron Fleming, 27, on a one-year deal worth a reported maximum of $4 million.

But with around $10 million remaining in cap space, it’s clear that the Giants’ offseason plan won’t come into any kind of clear focus until they make their 10 NFL Draft picks in late April.

Co-owner John Mara reiterated in January that his preferred philosophy is to build through the draft and supplement smartly in free agency, even when he enters holding more than $70 million in cap space. And so far GM Dave Gettleman and coach Joe Judge have followed suit.

This year’s draft is deep at offensive line and loaded with playmakers at several positions, too. So a rebuilding franchise like the Giants can capitalize by staying prudent with its free agent pursuits and seeking roster balance rather than making a big-name signing that wins the offseason but no games on Sundays.

Still, as of now on Thursday, the second official day of the new NFL league year, I do not believe the Giants are done with free agency just yet, because I do not believe they have gotten dramatically better yet with the money they had available to them.

And they still have options to improve.

Two other teams’ franchise-tagged players that could help the Giants immensely, Jaguars edge Yannick Ngakoue, 24, and Vikings free safety Anthony Harris, 28, likely can be had via trade.

They might be too expensive, requiring a second-round pick plus a long-term contract, and that could send them elsewhere. But these are players you can’t rule out for the Giants until they re-sign at home or join a new team. Ngakoue, specifically, wants out of Jacksonville.
