Jets sign Christian & Van Roten; cut Roberts

- BY MANISH MEHTA

Joe Douglas continued to chip away at remaking the Jets roster with a few tweaks to clear salary cap space and add depth. The Jets freed up $6 million by cutting Darryl Roberts, who started 10 games each of the past two seasons at cornerback and safety.

Gang Green added to their secondary agreeing to a oneyear deal with former Rams safety Marqui Christian, according to a source. Christian, a 2016 fifth-round pick by the

Cardinals, played a third of the defensive snaps and was a core special teamer for Los Angeles the past two seasons. He had 36 combined tackles in each season with the Rams.

The Jets also agreed to a oneyear deal with former Colts and Eagles veteran reserve center/ guard Josh Andrews, who was in Philly with Douglas.

Douglas has taken a methodical approach in the first week of free agency with a series of relatively safe signings. He's placed special emphasis on the offensive line to improve a suspect group from a year ago.

VAN ROTEN JOINS GANG GREEN

The Jets added former Panthers guard Greg Van Roten to their growing list of new offensive linemen this offseason. Gang Green agreed to a threeyear deal with Van Roten on Saturday, according to a source.

Van Roten started 27 games at right guard the past two seasons, including 11 last year before landing on injured reserve with a dislocated toe. The 30year-old Van Roten's arrival could have ramification on Brian Winter's future with the team. The Jets would clear $7.2 million of salary cap space by cutting Winters, who is rehabbing from season-ending shoulder surgery.

Van Roten is the fifth offensive lineman that new general manager Joe Douglas has signed in the past week, including four new ones. Douglas made it clear that his primary objective this offseason would be provide better help for Sam Darnold in the trenches.

RIVERS TO COLTS OFFICIAL

All Philip Rivers really wanted was a chance to play one more NFL season.

So when the Indianapolis Colts gave him a shot, the eighttime Pro Bowler took it.

Rivers officially ended his 16year tenure with the Chargers by signing the $25 million deal he agreed to earlier this week.

Rivers threw 23 touchdown passes, his lowest total since 2007, and 20 interceptions, matching the second-highest total of his career. While some blamed the troubles on a poor offensive line or Rivers trying to do too much to rally the Chargers late in games, others contended his skills were rapidly deteriorating.
