Déjà vu in Quarantine­d folks clicking

Empty buildings. Quiet streets. Widespread fear of the unknown. The tragic situation unfolding in New York and throughout the United States amid the coronaviru­s pandemic is a scene that’s played out in many movies over the years.

Recent days have seen increased viewership of films such as “Outbreak” and “Contagion” on Netflix and iTunes as people isolate themselves indoors and attempt to reconcile with what’s going on in the world.

Films in the genre have featured some similariti­es to what’s now happening in real life, while others have gone to further extremes. “Contagion” (2011):

The movie centers on a deadly illness seemingly spread by bats and pigs that begins to infect people in the United States after a woman (played by Gwyneth Paltrow) returns from a trip to Hong Kong.

Hysteria ensues, with doctors working to discover a cure while a conspiracy theory runs rampant as people die from the illness.” “Outbreak” (1995):

An ailment more similar to Ebola than coronaviru­s is in the middle of

“Outbreak,” which stars Dustin Hoffman and follows the outbreak of a disease causing deadly fevers in Zaire that makes its way to California.

Early in the movie, United States officials attempt to cover up the disease, which comes from a monkey that gets sold on the black market.
