Killed by subway in Queens
Fountains of Wayne star Schlesinger dies of bug
A person jumped in front of a Queens subway train Wednesday and was fatally struck, authorities said.
The incident happened at the 46th St.Bliss St. station in Sunnyside about 9:40 a.m.
The victim jumped in front of the oncoming train as it entered the station and died at the scene.
The victim’s age and gender were not immediately released.
The MTA temporarily stopped all No. 7 trains between Queensboro Plaza and 74th St.Broadway for an investigation.
Adam Schlesinger, a founding member of the pop-punk band Fountains of Wayne and an award-winning songwriter for TV and film, died Wednesday morning of complications from coronavirus. He was 52.
Schlesinger’s (inset) work spanned all corners of the industry. He cowrote the huge hit “Stacy’s Mom” as a part of Fountains of Wayne, wrote the title track for the Tom Hanks film “That Thing You Do!” composed music for a wide range of TV shows including “Sesame Street” and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” and worked on Broadway productions.
He had been nominated for awards in Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony categories in his career, winning a Grammy and three Emmys.
“Oh god. Adam Schlesinger was wildly talented,” comedian Kathy Griffin tweeted. “He graciously wrote the theme song to my ‘KATHY’ talk show called ‘I’ll say it.’ He was so patient with me as I was recording it in the booth, guiding me at every step. He did the gig as a favor, in a little home studio on a Saturday.” She closed the tweet with an emoji of a broken heart.
Fountains of Wayne — named after a lawn ornament store in Wayne, N.J. — released five albums from 1996-2011. “Stacy’s Mom,” a No. 21 hit, came from the 2003 album “Welcome Interstate Managers.”
Schlesinger is survived by two daughters.
