Ailey to step online with dance shows
The show will go on for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
The legendary modern dance company will share its talents with the world through its free, online “Ailey for All” portal, featuring archival performances, dance classes and original short films created by the dancers.
Marking the anniversary of Ailey’s very first performance on March 30, 1958, the streaming series kicks off with the 2015 film focused on its most well-known work, “Revelations.”
“Alvin Ailey created the ultimate prayer about overcoming adversity through hope and faith,” Artistic Director Robert Battle said. “During this period, it is fitting that we are launching Ailey All Access with his ‘Revelations’ on the company’s birthday. I know in my heart that he would be proud to see that we are taking on a challenge and seizing an opportunity to explore new ways of lifting up hearts, minds and spirits with the transformative power of dance.”
Earlier in the day, veteran dancer Hope Boykin – who is marking her 20th and final year with the company — hosted an online workshop, teaching excerpts from this masterpiece that’s currently also available on YouTube.
The performance series will continue with regularly scheduled weekly performances beginning Thursday at 7 p.m. through the company’s official portal alvinailey.org/ailey-allaccess.
Upcoming highlights include Ailey Co. member Yannick Lebrun’s intimate “Saa Magni,” Artistic Director Emerita Judith Jamison’s “Divining,’ Camille A. Brown’s “City of Rain” and Rennie Harris’ “Lazarus.”
“As we move forward together, the Ailey organization will continue to find ways to build community, inspire with Ailey’s artistry, and celebrate the indomitable human spirit through dance,” the company said in a statement.
A variety of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s digital content will also be accessible through its official social media accounts and websites.
