Blue signs new long snapper

-

The Giants on Wednesday signed Denver Broncos free agent long-snapper Casey Kreiter, marking the expected end of Zak DeOssie’s 13-year run in New York.

Kreiter, a fifth-year veteran, gets penciled in as the Giants’ 2020 starter. The only other snappers on the Giants’ roster are Colin Holba and futures signee Drew Scott.

Kreiter knows Giants punter Riley Dixon well from their two years as Broncos teammates in 2016-17. And Jason Garrett and the other former Cowboys coaches on Joe Judge’s staff know Kreiter from when the undrafted free agent out of Iowa first signed in Dallas in 2014.

He was waived twice by the Cowboys late in their 2014 and 2015 training camps. But he has been a mainstay the past four years in Denver, including appearing in 48 games the past three seasons.

DeOssie, an unrestricted free agent, could try to play elsewhere or retire. He won the first of two Super Bowls with the Giants as a rookie in 2007.

He also made two Pro Bowls, was a regular Giants special teams captain and appeared in 199 of a possible 208 regular season games.

DeOssie was placed on season-ending injured reserve on Thanksgiving Day this past season after playing through knee and wrist injuries.

The Giants’ kicking game became a major point of frustration within the organization.

The tipping point was Aldrick Rosas’ 0-for-2 field goal performance in a fivepoint road loss to the Bears on Nov. 24. The first miss came after a bad DeOssie snap, his second in two weeks.
