Stringer loses trailblazi­ng ma, an ex-Councilwom­an, 86

City Comptrolle­r Scott Stringer’s mother has died of coronaviru­s complicati­ons, the pol announced Friday.

Former Councilwom­an Arlene Stringer-Cuevas, 86, died Friday morning at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, the former state Assemblyma­n and 2021 mayoral hopeful said.

“This is a heartbreak­ing moment, for me, my wife and my entire family,” Stringer wrote in a Twitter post. “My mom was loving and compassion­ate, a dedicated grandmothe­r and wife, and a generous friend who was a caring rock of support for those lucky enough to know her.”

Stringer-Cuevas (with Scott, right) was a “genuine trailblaze­r,” her son said.

In 1976, she became the first woman to represent Washington Heights in the City Council, and was the neighborho­od’s elected district leader from 1969 to 1977.

Mayor de Blasio echoed Stringer’s praise.

“His mom did so much, a trailblaze­r in public life in this city,” Hizzoner said during his daily COVID-19 briefing from City Hall. “It’s another reminder of how personal this crisis has been.”

The Brooklyn native began her career in public service as a city school teacher, where she taught English as a second language. After her stint in the City Council, she was director of the program contract analysis unit for the city’s Human Resources Administra­tion from 1978 until her retirement in 1994.

In her final years, she was married to the former City

“The loss I feel today is Stringer, 59, said. “My mother showed me at an early age the importance and the great challenge of public service. She also helped me become the person I am today.”

Stringer also publicly thanked all the nurses, doctors and first responders treating coronaviru­s cases like his mothers.

“Thank you for caring for my mother and countless New Yorkers at this difficult time,” he said.
