BAKER UPDATE

Florida police waiting on Giants’ Baker to turn himself in on gun charges

- PAT LEONARD

Giants corner DeAndre Baker still had not turned himself in to the Miramar (Fla.) Police Department on Friday evening, more than 24 hours after a warrant for his arrest went public.

The police department has spoken with Baker’s attorney, which the Daily News first reported, but he still has not turned himself in.

Baker, 22, is wanted on four counts of armed robbery with a firearm and four counts of aggravated assault with a firearm stemming from an incident Wednesday night in which he allegedly robbed people at a party at gunpoint and told one of his accomplices to shoot someone.

The Seattle Seahawks’ Quinton Dunbar also is wanted on four counts of armed robbery in connection to the same incident. The department also has spoken with Dunbar’s attorney, but he has not yet been arrested.

“If the suspects do not turn themselves in, there are other avenues we can pursue,” Tania

Rues, the Miramar police department’s public information officer, told the Daily News Friday night. “We will not discuss any further details of this matter at this time.”

Detective Mark Moretti, in the application for Baker’s and Dunbar’s arrest warrants, recommended

“no bond,” or bail, on all counts — a recommendation typical of suspects considered a threat to the general public.

So it is possible, according to legal experts, that Baker and/or Dunbar have not turned themselves in yet because their attorneys are negotiating a bail amount with prosecutors in the seventeenth judicial court of Broward County (Fla.).

Dunbar does not appear to be in a negotiating mood, though.

The Miami Herald reported Friday afternoon that Dunbar’s attorney, Michael Grieco, said five witnesses had attested Dunbar was not involved. And

Grieco also told the Herald he had presented these new affidavits to the Broward State Attorney’s Offices but prosecutors were still requiring Dunbar to turn himself in and be jailed.

In response, however, Rues of the Miramar Police Department told the Daily News: “We have taped statements, sworn statements from each of the victims that were interviewed separately. The affidavit speaks for itself. If the victims have a different story to tell, they have not come to the Miramar police department and given any revised or different statements. If the victims have a different story to tell, they have not come to the police department to give it.”

The Miramar police department, for the record, interviewed four alleged victims and a witness for the original affidavit presented.

As for the Giants, there was no update from the team’s end on Friday.

The club’s original statement, which mentioned on Thursday that “we have been in contact with DeAndre,” was interpreted by some law enforcement experts who talked to the Daily News as the Giants implying they had advised Baker of the proper course of action but now were no longer responsible for his actions.

NFL OPENING FACILITIES; GIANTS IN PLANNING

The NFL told teams Friday that they can begin to open their facilities starting next Tuesday as long as it’s permitted within state and local regulations, and as long as proper procedures are followed and health protocols are in place.

Giants senior VP of communications Pat Hanlon told the Daily News that the club will continue its steady preparation to re-open when they can do so safely, with all of those conditions met.

“It takes more time than four days to reopen a facility that has been shut down for two months,” Hanlon said. “We are subject to state regulations. Bottom line, when we are cleared on all fronts to go back, we will, in an orderly, systematic, safe way to protect those in our building. It has been a process and protocol we have been developing for the last month or two.”
