Joe targets Latinos in Ariz. & Fla.

Vamanos, Señor Biden!

Joe Biden is beefing up his Latino outreach effort as his campaign eyes Arizona and Florida as enticing targets to shift the Electoral College map in his fight to oust President Trump.

The Biden campaign hired Julie Chavez Rodriguez, a granddaughter of iconic labor leader Cesar Chavez, to join its effort to build support among Latinos.

Rodriguez is also a former Obama White House official and worked on the campaign of California Sen. Kamala Harris.

Matt Barreto, head of consulting firm Latino Decisions, praised Rodriguez, but said Biden (inset) has plenty of work to do with Latino voters especially as the coronavirus crisis has distracted many people.

“The campaign will be different than anything we have seen, so we need new strategies and more outreach than ever before,” said Barreto, a UCLA professor.

The move came as a new poll says Biden is leading Trump by 7% points in Arizona. It’s the sixth straight poll showing Biden with a leading the fast-growing Grand Canyon State and the Real Clear Politics average shows him ahead of Trump by 4%.

Biden also has opened up a clear lead in Florida, where Latinos are expected to make up about 20% of the electorate in November. Winning either state would require Biden to win big with Latinos, a constituency that has not necessarily been a strong suit for him.

In the Democratic primary, Bernie Sanders won the Latino vote handily, although Biden showed signs of making inroads in later contests as he took control of the race.

If Biden can win Arizona or Florida, he could win the 270 electoral votes needed to oust Trump without retaking all three of the #BlueWall states of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, where white voters without college degrees are a bigger demographic.
