Knicks to hire ex-Net executive

- BY STEFAN BONDY

Leon Rose is making another move.

Frank Zanin, the OKC scout and former Nets executive, will be hired as a Knicks assistant GM, a source confirmed. Zanin, just like Rose, is from the Philadelphia area and sources said he is tight with the former agent, having worked alongside Rose early in his career.

Zanin is considered a top-level scout and a grinder. He was Billy King’s assistant GM with the Nets until 2016, and has since served as the OKC Thunder’s scout based on the East Coast. Zanin and his brother, TJ (a former NBA executive), were close with Kobe Bryant because they grew up playing basketball together in Philly.

His hiring is the latest example of Rose revamping his staff. Steve Mills was fired in February and sources said the team does not plan on retaining current executives Gerald Madkins, Craig Robinson and Harold Ellis. Jamie Matthews, the VP of basketball operations and longtime Garden employee, could also be in trouble.

Rose has already hired Brock Aller as a chief strategist and Walt Perrin as an assistant GM situated on the West Coast. Allan Houston, the special assistant to the GM, is a candidate to remain with the organization. It’s Rose’s first foray in a front office and sources said he’s leaning on longtime confidant William Wesley, also known as “Worldwide Wes.”

Rose has yet to make a move on the coaching front, but sources say Tom Thibodeau and current interim Knicks coach Mike Miller will be among the candidates.
