Southport, Conn.: I did not post a black square Tuesday on Instagram, quote Martin Luther King Jr. on Facebook, or share a selfie at home with my new Toni Morrison novel. Does that mean I’m a racist? No, it just means I’m losing at white guilt bingo. But I do have a black female friend. There, I just earned my first square. My friend and I text every day, and she tells me about all of the annoying white people that are asking her if she’s okay, and what they can do to help. She is not okay; she’s in pain and marches in protest daily, only to come home and be submerged in white guilt posts on social media from people who never once posted about racism before the murder of George Floyd.

An out-of-touch white acquaintance actually sent my friend $10 on Cash App, which she then took, slapped on another ninety, and donated to The Equal Justice Initiative, a nonprofit organization to end incarceration, excessive punishment, and racial inequality. She did not tell me to donate, but she did answer my question about what I could do to help. She also told me to argue with my Trump-supporting relatives, support black-owned businesses, and encourage my kids to speak up about racism. Thank you, dear friend, for keeping me off the bingo board, and helping me fight alongside you.

A detente

Fresh Meadows: After many days of protests, the question is when will we come to an understanding? The answer may be when the police and protesters can look at each other and say, “I care about you as much as you care about me.”

Astoria: At least that idiot Gov. Cuomo, who should be removed from office along with that incompetent who currently takes up space in City Hall, apologized to the rank and file of the NYPD for his asinine comments. Good luck getting an apology from him to all the family members who lost loved ones in nursing homes throughout the state due to his criminally negligent policy of sending them COVID-19 patients. Andrew Cuomo, your political career is over. You’re done. And don’t even dream of running for president of the United States. Why would you even want to when in your own words “America was never great to begin with”? Sebastian Mannuzza

Backing the Blue

North Massapequa, L.I.: How dare Gov. Cuomo state the NYPD didn’t do their job? They are “the Finest” for a

very good reason. Cuomo is a New Yorker. He knows how difficult their job is; how hard they all work to protect New York City and all the people who live and visit there. If he thought it was Mayor de Buttio’s fault for not handling things correctly, then take it out on him — not the NYPD. How do you think the officer who was run over, the officer who nearly had his head smashed with a brick, the officers who were in their vehicle when a Molotov cocktail was thrown at them feel knowing their governor does not have their backs? The lack of respect for the NYPD by the mayor and governor is sad and a disgrace. It needs to change.

Blue, too

Therese D. Shirreffs

Jackson, N.J.: Media coverage is extensive (and rightly so) when a citizen is unjustly killed by police. However, the number of these incidents is minuscule in comparison to the number of police officers killed in the line of duty each year attempting to keep citizens safe and protect the rights of all citizens. Where is the extensive media coverage and public outrage as this continues to occur? It amazes me that anyone in this day and age would serve the public as a police officer.

When chaos reigns

Manhattan: Enough is enough! Law-abiding citizens of New York City want peace and an end to the unlawful violence that has been rampant throughout the city the last few days. Stop the looting, stop the rioting! Residents have been in lockdown mode since the middle of March. Senior citizens are now cowering in fear. They couldn’t feel comfortable leaving their homes during the pandemic and now must remain inside because of this chaotic anarchy. What is de Blasio doing to stop the destruction? What kind of leadership is being shown? Absolutely horrendous situation here in New York City. Save the city before it is too late. We are being ravaged, plundered and subjected to violence never before seen. Stop the madness and insanity that is ruining our great metropolis.

Bring the pane

Holliswood: I have a question for all New York City residents: Which do you like better? Rudy’s Broken Windows policy or Bill de Blasio’s broken windows policy?

Gregory W. Chupa

Figureheads

North Massapequa, L.I.: Wherever there is a violent demonstration (riot), I blame the governors and mayors of those places. I am not talking about Republicans or Democrats. I would bet a month’s salary that the police were told to show restraint. Why else would you see police standing by while looting, burning and assaults are happening? You see police being beaten up, burning, looting — literally criminal activity. Our politicians should be held responsible for this carnage. Why aren’t they?

Ad man

Steven Malichek

Jamaica: Donald Trump needs to take out a full-page ad in the newspaper calling for the death penalty for each of the four officers who killed George Floyd. It was oh so easy for him to do it for the Central Park Five.

Taking requests

Brooklyn: According to a well-known expression, Rome’s emperor, the decadent and unpopular Nero, “fiddled while Rome burned.”

AP The expression has a double meaning: Not only did Nero play music while his people suffered, but he was an ineffectual leader in a time of crisis. Is history repeating itself?

Anthony Bruno

One for the books

Brooklyn: Too bad George Floyd’s death is going to be remembered as a time of rioting and looting, rather than a man of color being murdered by a police officer.

Steve Fassano

Death

Franklin Square, L.I.: The racial protests in the wake of the death of George Floyd are well-deserved but how does an abortion nation that willfully rips babies apart in the womb have the nerve to protest criminality when the nation itself is guilty of the heinous crime of murdering unborn children? I don’t know how many people have been killed by cops over the years but the number of child-in-the-womb murder in the U.S. is growing rapidly every day. If you support the racial protests and abortion, you are a terrible hypocrite!
