Shots into Bx. park crowd claim woman
A young woman was shot dead and three men were wounded after a gunman opened fire into crowd of teens celebrating the end of the high school year at a Bronx park, police and witnesses said.
The revelers were gathered inside Shoelace Park near E. 226th St. and Bronx Blvd. in Wakefield around 11 p.m. Friday when two men got out of a sedan and one starting firing, cops said.
A 19-yearold woman was struck multiple times and a 15-yearold boy was shot in the buttocks.
Medics rushed them both to Jacobi Medical Center, but the woman could not be saved.
Two other wounded men, ages 16 and 24, hobbled into Montefiore Medical Center themselves. The older victim was shot in the groin, and the younger teen had been hit in the ankle, cops said.
Both were transferred to Jacobi Medical Center after doctors realized they were also shot in the park.
Police said the gunman was targeting one of the three men, and the woman was tragically caught in the hail of bullets.
All three men were expected to survive.
A witness told the Daily News that the teens were celebrating the end of the school year, an annual event that happens every second weekend in June.
“It’s usually very loud and rowdy. It was a huge crowd,” she said, estimating that around 150 teens were at the park.
Another neighbor said firecrackers had been going off all evening “then all of a sudden the sound changed.”
“There were like nine shots,” said the neighbor. “It’s sad to lose a life.”
Cops were scouring the surrounding area Saturday looking for surveillance video of the shooting.
No arrests have been made.
