Showed her moon
B’klyn Assembly candidate admitted sophomoric pranks
ALBANY — Well, that’s awkward. An upstart Brooklyn Assembly candidate once mooned a couple who was having sex — and then blogged about it.
Emily Gallagher, who is mounting a primary challenge against Assemblyman Joe Lentol (D-Williamsburg), recounted the strange escapade in a 2003 Livejournal post back when she was a 19-year-old student at Ithaca College in upstate New York.
According to the post, Gallagher (inset left) was visiting friends in Syracuse when she spotted a couple doing the dirty through a window and stopped to watch.
When the pair realized they had an audience Gallagher decided to drop trou.
“Not only did I stare at people who were having sex in front of a window, but I remained even after they noticed me… I waved, smiled, and when the girl flipped out I mooned her,” Gallagher wrote. “You’d think i was on drugs… but no!”
The 36-year-old community activist’s other past posts reveal similarly sophomoric behavior.
In a separate entry, strewn with misspellings, Gallagher recalls throwing a “homeless party” with some friends.
“This consisted of me in a hat and scarf, steve in a fur coat, meaghan wrapped in a blanket and chelle in a garbage bag, passing around a cheap jug of sangria in a paper bag,” she wrote. “This was very fun but I had no idea how hard the cheapo crap was hitting me.
Before I knew it I was dancing with chelle to no music, and reinacting selected scenes from Fiddler on the Roof.”
The posts began circulating on social media in recent weeks.
On June 23, Gallagher will face off against one of the longestserving lawmakers in the state. Lentol, 77, has been a member of the Legislature since 1973, long before Gallagher was even born, representing Williamsburg and Greenpoint.
Andrew Epstein, Gallagher’s campaign manager, did not address the substance of the blog posts when asked for comment, instead accusing the Lentol campaign of using social media to smear his challenger.
“Frankly I’m embarrassed that the Assemblymember’s campaign is goofing around on the internet, scouring for blog posts of a teenage girl,” Epstein said. “Clearly Emily’s message of fighting for every day, working-class New Yorkers is resonating and they’re getting desperate.”
A member of Brooklyn’s Community Board 1, Gallagher has the backing of several progressive groups including the New Kings Democrats and was endorsed last week by former gubernatorial candidate and law professor Zephyr Teachout.
The upstate native moved to Brooklyn after college and quickly became an advocate for a variety of issues from environmental causes to sexual assault.
It’s only the second time during his career that Lentol (inset right) has dealt with a primary challenge. A representative for the incumbent slammed Gallagher for attempting to “deflect and attack.”
