LAST BREATH AFTER BIRTH

Kin: Baby shopping, then tragedy

- BY BRITTANY KRIEGSTEIN AND CHELSIA ROSE MARCIUS

Hours before a driver barreled into an SUV that caused the pregnant woman inside to lose the baby, the mom-to-be had picked out furnishings for her daughter’s room.

“In the morning, we were buying baby furniture,” the woman’s father-in-law, William Trapani, 54, of Richmond, S.I., told the Daily News. “And in the afternoon, this happened.”

The driver, 21-year-old Alexander Iacone, was behind the wheel of a Jeep Grand Cherokee on Saturday when he veered into the wrong lane at Hylan Blvd. and Corneila Ave., and plowed into the Nissan Rogue carrying the woman and her husband, court records show.

Iacone was arrested at the scene and charged with assault, reckless endangerment and aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle.

The couple, whose names have not yet been released, was rushed to Staten Island University North.

The 28-year-old woman, who was six months pregnant, underwent an emergency C-section, but her baby girl could not be saved.

“That baby was born. That baby took breaths — not a breath, breaths,” insisted Trapani, who said hospital records show the infant drew air before she died.

An autopsy will determine whether the child had taken its first breath at the hospital — which, according to New York State law, could lead to a homicide charge.

Iacone, who already had his license suspended or revoked four times before, told cops he knew he was speeding, and that he was not permitted to drive.

Iacone made bail on Monday, records show. He’s due back in court July 13.

“I’m hoping that the DA sees the outrage that we’re hearing and wants to penalize this to the maximum that the law allows,” Trapani said. “Somebody on a suspended license continued to drive, and really set in [motion] a series of events that can’t be recovered from for us.”

“That would have been my first grandchild,” he added. “I’m 54 years old. There’s no way I should ever be outliving my grandchildren.”

Trapani said his son suffered severe bruising and pain in his legs, while his daughter-in-law is still in the hospital recovering.

The couple — who had already picked out a name for their little girl — are planning to bury her next week.

“To them, their child was born,” he said. “And they’re taking it like anybody else would take the loss of the child.”
