To maximize Williams’ talent

-

Both Williams and the Giants prefer a long-term deal in theory, but the Giants want Williams at a significantly lower number. GM Dave Gettleman has a lot invested in keeping Williams after acquiring him from the Jets at last fall’s trade deadline for this spring’s third-round pick and a 2021 fifth-rounder.

But Judge said “there have not been extensive talks on contracts since the spring’s gone virtual.”

“The biggest focus I have on Leonard right now is that this year, he can really go ahead and maximize his potential,” the coach reiterated. “I’m looking forward to working with him for this year, and I’m really looking forward to working with him on the field, finally, to be honest with you.”

STATUS QUO WITH BAKER

Giants corner DeAndre Baker has remained away from the Giants’ virtual offseason program as instructed by the team following his May 16 arrest in Fort Lauderdale.

But Judge would not comment on Baker other than to say: “He’s still on our roster, and I’m not gonna comment on any ongoing legal situation and any ongoing legal investigation.”

Baker, 22, has pleaded not guilty to four counts of robbery with a firearm and four counts of aggravated assault with a firearm connected to a May 13 alleged incident in Miramar, Fla.

Baker is out on $200,000 bail awaiting the filing of formal charges or the dismissal of the charges. The investigation is ongoing.

The Daily News first reported after Baker’s May 17 release from jail that the Giants had told him to stay away from their virtual meetings and “focus on his legal issues.”
