S.I. bust yields fireworks, dead gators

-

Assemblyman Michael Blake on Thursday refused to concede the Democratic primary race to replace retiring South Bronx Rep. Jose Serrano, alleging that the election was hampered by “intentional black voter suppression.”

Blake, who scored second place in the Tuesday primary’s in-person ballot count, made the allegation in a lengthy statement released by his campaign in which he listed irregularities he said occurred as voters went to the polls.

Though he offered no concrete evidence, Blake said the irregularities formed a dubious pattern.

City Councilman Ritchie Torres — who’s black — is on track to win the primary, holding a 11% edge over Blake in the ballot count.

Torres has notably refrained from claiming victory, saying he wants all mail-in ballots to be counted first, a process that’s expected to take days or possibly weeks.

The City Board of Elections declined to comment.

Authorities making an illegal fireworks bust on Staten Island got a surprise when they found three alligator carcasses along with a cache of explosives.

Sheriff’s department deputies swept in on 10 suspects on the Staten Island Expressway near the Goethals Bridge on Sunday, catching them red-handed returning from picking up fireworks, officials said.

The alligator carcasses were found in one of three vehicles that were stopped.

The group was charged with 10 counts of possession and sale of fireworks and illegal transport of three alligator carcasses, the city Sheriff ’s Department said.

The busts stemmed from a fireworks trafficking investigation, city Sheriff Joseph Fucito said.

The people arrested had no prior convictions for use of fireworks.
