Man shoots, stirs assault on Finest

- BY THOMAS TRACY AND MICHAEL SHERIDAN

A mystery man in a wheelchair opening fire on someone in Harlem apparently led to a clash between police and a massive crowd who threw bottles at them over the weekend.

The gunman fired off multiple rounds around 3:40 a.m. Sunday near W. 134th St. and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd., police said. The shooting was captured on video released by the NYPD late Monday.

Authorities told the Daily News the man was shooting at someone but missed.

The gunshots were picked up by the NYPD’s ShotSpotter system, which uses microphones to pick up sounds of gunfire, police said. Cops were then dispatched to investigate. Several shell casings were found, along with at least two fired bullets.

A few blocks away between W. 131st and 133rd Sts., police encountered a group of about 500 people. When they tried to break up the crowd, some people started to throw objects and bottles at the officers.

Video shows the NYPD vehicles idling on Powell Jr. Blvd. and 132nd St. while a dozen men and women sitting in the bed of a red pickup truck lob glass bottles and other objects. As more police arrived, the crowd grew louder, chasing NYPD SUVs down the block and jeering.

After about a two hour standoff, the crowd dispersed, police said. One person was arrested following the clash.

Darryl Henderson, 58, was busted Monday, officials said. He was charged with riot, inciting to riot, reckless endangerment, attempted assault, criminal mischief and unlawful assembly.

This is far from Henderson’s first time running afoul of the law. Sources say he’s been arrested at least 42 times, including two felonies and nearly two dozen misdemeanors. His past crimes, sources said, include turnstile jumping and drinking in public.

There are also three active warrants for his arrest, police sources noted.
