Big blow to Don’s rally set for N.H.

President Trump’s campaign has been taken by storm.

The Trump campaign announced Friday it’s scrapping the president’s weekend rally in Portsmouth for “safety reasons” as Tropical Storm Fay lashes the East Coast.

The rally was supposed to take place Saturday; the campaign now hopes to hold a raincheck event in “a week or two,” White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany told reporters onboard Air

Force One for Trump’s trip to Florida.

Fay began battering the tri-state area Friday afternoon and was expected to move north through New England over the weekend.

The Portsmouth event is the second Trump rally to not go according to plans in the past month.

On June 20, Trump held a rally in Tulsa, Okla., that had been branded as his triumphant return to the campaign trail after months on the sidelines because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The campaign boasted that as many as 1 million people had reserved tickets and a second stage was built outside the venue for Trump to give a separate speech. That was canceled after just 6,000 people showed up to the BOK Center, which has capacity for 19,000.

As with the Tulsa event, Trump has faced criticism for planning a rally in New Hampshire amid the stillraging COVID-19 pandemic. The president has not worn a face mask in public despite recommendations from his own administration. Many of his supporters have likewise not worn masks.

Dr. Bruce Dart, the director of Tulsa’s Health Department, said this week that, despite flagging attendance, Trump’s June 20 rally “more than likely contributed” to the city’s recent spike in coronavirus cases.
