Cop stops a suicide in nick of time

- BY THOMAS TRACY

A brave, big-hearted NYPD housing cop saved a suicidal woman about to shoot herself during Friday’s storm, officials said.

Police Officer Christopher Blom was on patrol in Flushing, Queens, when he and his partner were dispatched to look for a despondent, suicidal woman who disappeared into the rain as Tropical Storm Fay pummeled the city.

The panicked family of the woman — who works in law enforcement but is not part of the NYPD — called police when she vanished, and described her to officers.

Blom and his partner found the 47-year-old woman’s car on the street near her home about 2:30 p.m.

“Because of the storm it was hard to see [inside],” Blom told the Daily News on Saturday.

So he walked up to the car’s window, and saw the woman in the back of the car, behind the driver’s seat. A gun was in her hand, pointed toward her.

“She’s crying and below the window line you can see the gun,” Blom said. “I just froze for a moment. I was nervous, but I felt that I needed to help her because she was in distress.”

So, as unobtrusively as he could, he tapped on the woman’s window, drawing her attention away from the gun.

“Can I speak to you? If we can just talk, I would love to be able to help you,” Blom recalled asking her.

As Blom gained her confidence, he opened the driver’s side door and sat next to her to give her a shoulder to cry on.

As the woman hugged the 16-year NYPD veteran, he put a hand over the top of her gun, so he could prevent it from firing if she pulled the trigger.

After a few minutes, the woman gave Blom her weapon and agreed to go to the hospital for an evaluation.

“Before she left, I tapped on the ambulance’s glass,” Blom said. “I waved at her and told her I’ll check in on her. She said ‘Thank you.’ ”

“Yesterday was very stressful, but after it was done I saw the looks on her family’s face and when she hugged me and said ‘Thank you’ I felt amazing,” Blom said. “Tomorrow can be a brand-new day for her.”
