Evil slice of life in pizza shop shove

- BY ANNA CHOI AND GRAHAM RAYMAN

A 76-year-old man was knocked unconscious by a crazed West Village cyclist who was caught on camera gently putting down a slice of pizza before walloping the victim, police said. Antonio Hidalgo had just finished his own slice at Fresh 99 Cents Pizza on W. 14th St. near Seventh Ave. on July 21 about 7:30 p.m. when the suspect appeared. Hidalgo said he was complimenting the owner of the pie shop so he didn’t notice the cyclist (inset) at first.

As the elderly man left the store, the cyclist yelled what Hidalgo described as “gibberish,” put down his own food plate and pushed Hidalgo to the ground, the victim said.

“In 76 years, this is the first time I have been attacked like this,” he said. “This has never happened to me before. It’s my first time.”

Hidalgo fell backward to the sidewalk and was knocked unconsciousness, as someone from the gathering crowd called 911.

Surveillance video released by police Friday shows the cyclist calmly picking up his pizza and riding off down W. 14th St.

Hidalgo cut the back of his head and was treated and released from Lenox Hill Hospital.

“It hurts a little sometimes. Right now, it hurts a little,” he said about his head wound. “It happened ... days ago, but I still think about it every day.”

A pizza shop worker, who declined to give his name, said Hidalgo said something to the cyclist, which prompted the cyclist to curse at the victim before shoving him.

But Hidalgo denied there was ever an argument, and said he didn’t know his attacker.

He fears being recognized by the man and targeted again.

“He could be walking around and see me,” Hidalgo said.
