Security big won’t dish on Don and Vlad
Robert O’Brien said Sunday the Trump administration has “made it very clear” to Russia that it should stop meddling in the upcoming election.
But the national security adviser refused to say if President Trump personally raised the issue with Russian strongman Vladimir Putin.
“I don’t get involved in the conversations the president has with foreign heads of states,“O’Brien said on CBS’ Face the Nation. “Those are private conversations.”
O’Brien (inset) downplayed intelligence reports last week that detailed Russia’s active and concrete campaign to help Trump, equating it with what intelligence officials call China’s vague “preference” for Democrat Joe Biden.
“Whether it’s China, Russia or Iran, we’re not going to put up with it, and there will be severe consequences with any country that attempts to interfere with our free and fair election,” O’Brien said.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) countered that Trump is coddling Russia because he wants a repeat of 2016, when Russia mounted a wide-ranging and successful campaign to help Trump and hurt Democrat Hillary Clinton.
“Russia is actively, 24/7 interfering in our election,” Pelosi told CNN’s State of the Union. “They did so in 2016, and they are doing so now.”
O’Brien claimed that any foreign power that seeks to interfere in the election would face harsh retaliation.
But he signaled that Russia probably wouldn’t face additional measures because Trump has already been so tough on the Kremlin, a Trump talking point that critics scoff at.
Trump refuses to say what he’s discussed with Putin during their frequent conversations, but has never claimed to have brought up election interference in any of their one-on-one chats.
The president, whose son Donald Jr. infamously sought Russian dirt on Clinton four years ago, has never publicly criticized Putin, and even defended the Russian leader against accusations leveled by U.S. intelligence.
