President Trump demanded Congress shift “ridiculous” hearings about drastic cutbacks in postal service so they don’t conflict with the Republican National Convention next week.
“Let them hold them NOW (during their Convention) or after our Convention is over,” Trump wrote on Twitter.
Trump pointedly tagged Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in his tweet, a none-too-subtle message to the Kentucky Republican to flex his political muscle on the issue.
The Republican president is getting fierce political blowback from both sides of the aisle about dramatic cutbacks implemented by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, his handpicked choice to lead the agency.
Ninety Democrats Wednesday signed a petition calling for DeJoy to resign or be fired.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) insisted Democrats would not stand by while Trump’s acolytes seek to prevent voters from voting by mail amid a pandemic — or dismantle an important public service as collateral damage.
“The Postal Service is Election Central during the pandemic,” Pelosi said. “Democrats will not allow the President to force Americans to choose between their health and their vote.”
Pelosi said DeJoy told her that he has no plans to return sorting machines or mail collection boxes that have been removed in recent weeks.
The president openly admitted that he is blocking a $25 billion rescue plan for the post office because the extra funding could allow it to better process millions of mail-in ballots cast by voters who fear going to physical polling places amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Democrats are returning from August recess to hold hearings on the cutbacks, which they believe are part of Trump’s scheme to discredit
