Absent during Big Blue scrimmage

Shepard and the pass was broken up by rookie corner Darnay Holmes.

Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett insisted he thinks Jones has had an “excellent” camp so far. But Garrett also said any mistakes Jones makes, like any other player, will not be tolerated. They will be coached and corrected.

“I don't know if we ever use that word ‘tolerate' as coaches,” Garrett said. “Daniel's done an excellent job. He comes in here and he's so prepared, he's so into it, he wants to know every detail. To play in this league … there are a lot of different things that happen over the course of a play or the course of a practice. There's so much to learn from. I've never been around a player who played a perfect game. I've never been around a player who had a perfect practice.”

Jones looks chiseled physically, load he's carried in practice. Judge called it a “calculated decision.”

Center Spencer Pulley and safety Jaquarius Landrews also didn't play. And rookie corner Darnay Holmes left midway through with a lower-body injury.

The Giants had no official update on either Engram, 24, or Martinez, 25, prior to the game.

Center Spencer Pulley and safety Jaquarius Landrews also noticeably stronger than he was as a rookie. He said he gained almost 10 pounds of muscle. He clearly put in the work in the gym, and everyone knows he puts in the work in the classroom.

Schuplinski even said he's noticed Jones' arm “looks even stronger now” than when the QB coach worked with him prior to the 2019 NFL Draft coming out of Duke.

“I don't know if that's a testament to his work in the offseason and what he's been doing,” Schuplinski said. “That's one thing that jumped out to me.”

Judge added that he liked Jones' command in the huddle, as well.

Jones' arm strength was not his problem as a rookie, though. It was his decision-making and turnovers that needed honing.

And so far in camp, he has didn't play.

Martinez had been a surprise absence at Thursday's practice. Judge had said after that practice that he wasn't overly concerned at that point, but the coach was waiting to hear more from his trainers.

GM Dave Gettleman signed Martinez to a three-year, $30 million free agent deal this spring.

Engram has been having a stellar camp despite coming off surgery on his left foot last December for a Lisfranc-like sprain. This is his first absence all camp.

He missed eight games in 2018 and five last year, most due to injuries.

The Giants are one of many NFL teams dealing with a plethora of injuries during this 2020 training camp, coming off a spring with no organized workouts due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
