Camp over, Bell set for action

- BY CHARLES MCDONALD

Le’Veon Bell is revved up and ready to go for the regular season. As the Jets end training camp and get ready for their season opener against the Buffalo Bills, all eyes are on the 28-yearold running back.

Bell thought he and the Jets had a productive training camp. Bell has said repeatedly he feels like he’s in terrific shape and is playing at his lightest weight in years.

“This is my camp where I came in kind of lighter,” Bell said. “It was really going to be interesting to see how … in individual and running my routes and getting in and out of cuts, how comfortable I would be. Even like picking up blitzes, you know what I’m saying, that’s something I had to quickly get adjusted to being a little lighter, but it feels good.”

Obviously, Bell and the Jets are going to have to figure out how to improve his production this season. Bell averaged 5.9 yards per target and 3.2 yards per carry in 2019, his first season with the Jets.

“At the end of the day, I’m not really worried about the stats of it,” Bell said. “I just know I’m the best I’ve ever been.”

While Bell may not be worried about his stats, a more efficient Bell would undoubtedly be a big boost to the Jets’ offense. Part of that responsibility falls onto head coach and offensive play caller Adam Gase, who has spoken about how he wants to get Bell in space more often than he did last season.

“Whatever type of package we are (in), I feel like I’m a player that can be versatile,” Bell said. “I can play running back, I can play the slot and I don’t necessarily have to get the ball. I’m great at blocking, you know, pass blocking and run blocking. I just try to express to coach Gas e … I worked so hard for this you don’t have to take me off the field.”
