The real Yankee MVP, Rodgers leading the Pack & new blood at U.S. Open

-

● I love what Luke Voit has done for the Yankees this season.

I love his back-story.

But say it again:

DJ LeMahieu has been the team’s best player for the past two seasons.

At $12 million a year.

If the Yankees don’t sign him as a free agent this winter, the Mets should.

● You know what Aaron Rodgers looked like last Sunday against the Vikings?

He looked like Patrick Mahomes, just older, and as much the main event for the Packers as he’s ever been.

This is, by the way, a Packers team that happens to have won 14 of its last 17 regular season games.

Gets a little lost sometimes.

● Over the last three games of their series against the Nuggets, the Los Angeles Clippers looked like the Yankees did at the end of the Red Sox series in ’04.

● The Coach Calipari All-Stars are having a very nice run of Bubble Ball, right? Anthony Davis of the Lakers. Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro of the Heat.

And then there is Mr. Jamal Murray of the Nuggets, who has spent a month making shots from the Dumbo ride.

● You think the Blue Jays are missing Buffalo yet? Pretty sure that the only Yankee who didn’t hit a home run this week was the manager.

● It is worth wondering what the Mets season would have looked like if there had been more to their starting rotation than the great Jacob deGrom.

● It was eleven months ago that Jose Altuve hit a walk-off home run that won the pennant for the Houston Asterisks.

When he came off the injured list the other day, Altuve was hitting .216, with two homers and 12 RBI.

● On Thursday Tiger Woods went from being in the mix, on a day when he’d finally made some putts, to being eight shots behind Justin Thomas faster than Winged Foot’s greens, which can make you feel as if you’re rolling marbles in a bathtub.

And when he finished chopping the ball around No. 18 for a double bogey, he looked like he’d taken a Mickelson pill on his way to the clubhouse.

● It was fun while it last with the Islanders, wasn’t it?

Giannis of the Bucks won another MVP award the other day.

But guess what?

If the Bucks had LeBron instead of the Greek kid, I believe they’d still be playing.

● It is absolutely true that Rory

McIlroy, one of the best people in sports, hasn’t won a major for six years.

He’s also still just 31 years old.

● Djokovic isn’t going anywhere. Nadal might win his 13th French Open in a few weeks.

And who knows, old Fed might have another run left in him, maybe at the next Wimbledon.

But it was a great thing for the sport to watch Dominic Thiem and Sascha Zverev give us that kind of 5-setter at Arthur Ashe Stadium last Sunday.

● Finally today:

Happy Birthday to our oldest son Christopher.

He and his fiancée were supposed to have been married next Saturday before they had to push their wedding date back a year because of COVID-19.

So they put those plans on hold.

Not their lives.

Makes me love both of them even more than I already did.
