Judge colorful on Golden play

- BY PAT LEONARD

Joe Judge's grade for Golden Tate on Sunday's final Giants play was a very clear “F.” “At the end with the f—king penalty. Oh, pardon me,” Judge said of Tate's offensive pass interference in the end zone. “At the end with the penalty, obviously that's something we've got to clean up & we can't shoot ourselves in the foot.

You can church up that language in the quotes.”

Tate caught five passes for 47 yards in his season debut after missing the opener with a hamstring injury, but his push-off on Bears corner Buster Skrine robbed Daniel Jones and the Giants offense of converting from Chicago's 10-yard line with a chance to win.

Bears safety Eddie Jackson might have hit Tate before Jones' pass got there to knock the pass away incomplete, as well. But officials already had seen Tate push off and trip Skrine to the turf.

“Look, you're standing on the 10-yard line with one play to go,” Judge said. “That's really what you're working for in the two-minute drills, just give yourself an opportunity.”

Jones had driven the Giants 50 yards in less than two minutes after taking over with 2:02 remaining at the Giants' 40 following Cairo Santos' wide left 50yard field-goal attempt.

And the Giants committed only three penalties in they game, but Tate's was a big one.

Tate was not available to speak to the media after the game.

UP AND DOWN

Running back Wayne Gallman was a healthy scratch along with LB T.J. Brunson, OT Jackson Barton, TE Eric Tomlinson and DL R.J. McIntosh, while Week 1 contributors safety Adrian Colbert (hurt) and OLB Carter Coughlin (hamstring) were sidelined by injuries.

So Tate, rookie OLB Cam Brown, rookie OG Shane Lemieux, and corner Ryan Lewis were newcomers to the lineup, and Brown played on special teams in his NFL debut, while Lewis and Lemieux did not see time.

But Gallman's scratch was especially noticeable when Saquon Barkley went down and Dion Lewis had to handle the full workload. Judge made clear that special teams were a factor. Gallman had played three offensive snaps and zero on special teams in Week 1.

“We just made the best decision personnel wise is what the game plan called for,” Judge said. “There's a lot of things that factor in. It's never just (about the) run game or pass game or offense. It's three sides of the ball, so all the roles and factors as well what the defense does on the other side, they call play a role. Sometimes you may sit a guy on offense because defense may need something extra. So it's never directly related to just one guy. There's a lot of things that go into it.”
