Busted in stab slay of girlfriend uptown

- BY THOMAS TRACY

A Manhattan man who called police and threatened to commit suicide by cop after stabbing his girlfriend to death was arrested early Tuesday after days on the run, officials said Tuesday.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison said Joshua Martinez, 33, was apprehended without incident early Tuesday.

“Thank you to the public for all the information you provided,” Harrison tweeted.

Members of the 34th Precinct Detective Squad and the NYPD’s Fugitive Enforcement Division made the arrest, officials said.

After questioning at the 34th Precinct station house, cops charged him with murder, assault and harassment, officials said.

Martinez’s girlfriend Carol Nystrom was found dead in the couple’s apartment on W. 206th St. in Inwood on Sept. 17 after a concerned friend called police and said she hadn’t heard from the victim in several days.

Cops forced open the door and found Nystrom’s beaten and stabbed body on the bedroom floor.

It appeared she had been dead for a nearly a week amid the graffiti-covered walls and blankets over the windows. Neighbors said Martinez and Nystrom had a turbulent relationship and would fight daily.

While on the run, Martinez (inset) called Crime Stoppers on Saturday, claiming he was going to go out in a blaze of glory by “killing and shooting some cops,” police sources said. Cops reissued his mugshot in the hopes that someone would tip them off to his whereabouts before he made good on his threat.

Martinez has an extensive rap sheet dating back to 2009. He was arrested in March for slashing and robbing an acquaintance a month earlier, cops said.

Friends described Nystrom as a beloved neighbor who worked as a dog walker and delivered food for Doordash. She was also a seamstress and created COVID-19 masks for friends.
