Jets’ Crowder doubtul for clash with Colts

- BY MANISH MEHTA

The injury bug continues to hit the Jets amid their nightmarish start to the season. Adam Gase said Thursday it’s doubtful wide receiver Jamison Crowder will play against the Colts on Sunday after suffering a hamstring injury in practice last week. Crowder, who was Sam Darnold’s most reliable weapon last season and in Week 1, hopes to return for Gang Green’s Week 4 matchup next Thursday night against the Broncos.

It gets worse.

Starting right tackle George Fant is in the concussion protocol after suffering a practice injury Wednesday, Gase said. Chuma Edoga, who started eight games as a rookie, would replace Fant if he isn’t medically cleared.

Starting center Connor McGovern, who appears unlikely to start in Indianapolis after hurting his hamstring in Gang Green’s loss to the 49ers, missed practice again. Gase said the veteran could be active as “an emergency guy” in Indianapolis.

Josh Andrews is in line for his first start with Gang Green. One year after

Jets used a litany of starting offensive line groupings, they could have two different pieces against the top-ranked defense through the first two weeks.

The string of injuries at wide receiver could prompt Gang Green to elevate undrafted rookie Lawrence Cager, who impressed in camp before getting hurt, from the practice squad.

“His development is going to have to quicken up,” Gase said. “We’re down to whoever’s available. Whoever’s got a pulse right now, we’re ready to go.”

Rookie safety Ashtyn Davis will miss practice due to a groin injury. Wide receiver Breshad Perriman (ankle) won’t practice or play this weekend. Cornerback Quincy Wilson remains in the concussion protocol.

Gase said that he wants to spread out touches in the backfield a week after 37-year-old Frank Gore dominated the carries against San Francisco. Rookie La’Mical Perine, who didn’t get a touch until the second half, will likely get more work. Josh Adams and/or Kalen Ballage could also get a heavier workload.
