DERULO’S 3-DECADE STREAK

Tops pop chart yet again

- BY KARU F. DANIELS

Jason Derulo may have just turned 31 (last week) but that hasn’t stopped him from making history spanning three decades.

With his new single “Savage Love (Laxed-Siren Beat)” catapulting to the top of the pop chart this week, the platinum-selling crooner has become the first and, so far, the only solo artist to top the Billboard Pop Songs chart across the 2000s, the 2010s and now the 2020s.

He previously topped the chart with 2009’s “Whatcha Say,” 2010’s “In My Head,” 2014’s “Talk Dirty ft. 2 Chainz” and 2015’s “Want to Want Me.”

While he is the first solo act to hit that milestone, Derulo isn’t the first musical act overall to accomplish sending songs to number one across three consecutive decades.

Maroon 5 beat him to the punch earlier this year when the Adam Levine-fronted band, who first appeared on the chart in 2004, sent “Memories” to number one on the radio airplay chart in February.

Still, Derulo is overjoyed by the fact that he’s the first solo artist to achieve this feat and believes he accomplished it by constantly challenging himself to evolve and experiment with his art.

“It’s important to reinvent yourself as much as possible, otherwise people just get tired of it,” the former “So You Think You Can Dance” judge told the music trade outlet. “I’ve tried everything under the sun at least three times.”

A native of Miramar, Fla., Derulo has had a whirlwind career since winning the gand prize on “Showtime at the Apollo” and then going on to sign a deal with Warner Bros. Records.

Last year, he appeared in the disastrous, star-studded film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s legendary Broadway musical “Cats.”

The Haitian-American sensation has landed on all fours since then – becoming a TikTok star, and delivering another hit song.
