Patriots-Chiefs on for tonight

- BY ANDY CLAYTON

The Patriots vs. Chiefs game will now be part of a MNF doubleheader tonight.

The news comes a day after New England’s quarterback Cam Newton tested positive for COVID-19, which put one of the NFL’s marquee games of Week 4 in doubt.

The Chiefs also had a player test positive — reportedly practice squad QB Jordan Ta’amu — on Saturday.

But after no new positives were returned on Sunday morning after another round of testing, the league decided to go forward with the game. The Patriots will now battle the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium at 7:00 tonight on Channel 2.

“The clubs also worked closely with the NFL and NFLPA and infectious disease experts to conduct contact tracing and post-COVID exposure protocols are now in effect for both teams,” the NFL said in a statement.

Both teams will be tested again this morning, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.

The Patriots announced on Saturday morning that the player who tested positive “immediately entered selfquarantine.” Although the team did not specify the player, the Daily News confirmed it was Newton.

Newton, the NFL’s MVP in 2015 with the Panthers who is in his first season with the Patriots, posted a message on Instagram on Sunday.

“I appreciate all the love, support, and well wishes,” he wrote. “I will take this time to get healthy and self reflect on the other amazing things that I should be grateful for.”

With Newton now on the NFL’s reserve/COVID-19 list, Patriots (2-1) coach Bill Belichick will turn to either veteran QB Brian Hoyer or secondyear signal-caller Jarrett Stidham against the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs (3-0).

The original Monday Night Football tilt — the Falcons vs. the Packers — will shift to an 8:50 p.m. ET start on ESPN.
