B’klyn councilman takes steps to run for mayor

City Councilman Carlos Menchaca appears to be mounting a run for mayor.

Menchaca, who represents Sunset Park, would join an already crowded field of candidates vying for the city’s top political post.

On Friday, he registered a campaign for a mayoral bid with the city’s Campaign Finance Board and teased an upcoming announcement on social media.

“Amigos: These past months I’ve been thinking a lot about our city and how we could do better,” he wrote. “We must do better. Nothing is official … will share news soon. #brighterdays.”

Menchaca is perhaps best known for blocking the recently kaput Industry City deal, which would have brought hundreds of jobs to the Brooklyn waterfront in his Council district. He argued that the deal would have made it harder for working-class people to live in the area.

If he fully commits to the race, he will face a long list of contenders who have a significant head start.

The Democratic field of candidates includes: Comptroller Scott Stringer, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, Mayor de Blasio’s former legal counsel Maya Wiley, his former Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia and Shaun Donovan, a former member of Barack Obama’s cabinet.

Also running as Dems are de Blasio’s former head of Veterans Affairs, Loree Sutton and non-profit head Dianne Morales.

Possible GOP contenders include Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels, and grocery chain owner John Catsimatidis.
