Oliver gets stinky honor in Danbury

- BY JOSEPH WILKINSON

John Oliver will always be number two in a Western Connecticut city.

The city of Danbury named its sewage plant after the host of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” host two months after he ripped the municipality for no reason during a show.

The City Council voted 18-1 on Thursday to name the facility the John Oliver Memorial Sewage Plant — even though the 43-yearold British native is very much alive.

Mayor Mark Boughton tweeted out the news after the vote, with a “Booh Yah!” for emphasis.

During an August episode of his HBO show, Oliver (below) was talking about racial disparities in jury selection in Connecticut, noting that the cities of Hartford and New Britain had somehow ended up outside a district jury selection database. He then facetiously suggested a better plan.

“If you’re gonna forget a town in Connecticut, why not forget Danbury?” Oliver asked. “Because, and this is true, f—- Danbury.”

Oliver later said that he singled out the 85,000-person city for no reason in particular.

“From its charming railway museum to its historic Hearthstone Castle, Danbury, Connecticut, can eat my whole a—,” Oliver said. “I know exactly three things about Danbury: USA Today ranked it the second-best city to live in 2015, it was once the center of the American hat industry and, if you’re from there, you’ve got a standing invite to come get a thrashing from John Oliver, children included, f—- you.”

Boughton defended his town in a Facebook video response and promised the sewage plant name “because it’s full of crap, just like you, John.”

Oliver said that if the town followed through, he’d donate $55,000 to Danbury-area charities.

Boughton said that Oliver has already donated $30,000 to Danbury teachers and a donation to the local food bank is expected soon, according to television station WTNH. The city is hoping Oliver will visit as well.
