$57M haul for Lindsey opponent
Jaime Harrison, the Democrat seeking to unseat Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-Ky.) raised a record-shattering $57 million in the third quarter as their surprisingly tight South Carolina dog fight enters the home stretch.
Polls show the cash-flush Harrison is running neck-andneck with Graham in the conservative Palmetto State as the veteran senator battles for his political life after a series of missteps.
Harrison, who is Black, is set to far outspend Graham in the final three weeks leading up to Election Day as he seeks to capitalize on the uneven campaign run by the Republican incumbent.
Graham is seeking to showcase his conservative credentials by leading the GOP push to confirm Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court before America goes to the polls on Nov. 3.
As the Judiciary Committee chairman, Graham has a prime perch to showcase his importance to conservative voters who consider President Trump’s success at installing right-wing judges to be one of his signature achievements.
But the Barrett hearings pose potential pitfalls for Graham. He famously flip-flopped on his ironclad vow not to approve a Supreme Court justice in the final year of Trump’s first term.
Harrison was once considered a long shot as a serious challenge to Graham, who appeared more concerned with heading off a potential primary challenge from the far right. The former state Democratic Party chairman obliterated the previous fundraising mark of $37 million set by ex-Rep. Beto O’Rourke in his 2018 race against Sen. Ted Cruz. But O’Rourke’s still lost — a cautionary tale for Harrison.
