Cop who hit & killed vic going like 60

- BY THOMAS TRACY

The NYPD officer who hit and killed a young Bronx woman was speeding over 60 mph when he slammed into the victim in a caught-on-camera collision, Commissioner Dermot Shea said Wednesday.

Investigators initially thought the cop was traveling 30 or 40 mph when he crashed into Sofia Gomez Aguilon on Oct. 5 — but found he was going much faster after reviewing “in car camera systems,” Shea said.

“If you actually get into the car itself you can accelerate and decelerate in a short period of time pretty rapidly,” Shea said on NY1 Wednesday morning. “This is about eight or nine days old now and it’s never going to get better. It’s just a tragic, tragic incident.”

The speed of each NYPD vehicle can also be monitored remotely from a satellite hook-up linked to police headquarters. The officer has since been pulled from patrol, Shea said.

Gomez Aguilon (inset), 20, was on her way home from work around 3:25 p.m. when a marked police car responding to an officer’s call for help hit her in a crosswalk on Pelham Parkway South at Wallace Ave. in Allerton, cops said.

Medics rushed the Guatemalan immigrant to Jacobi Medical Center in critical condition. She died three days later.

“The light was red for the patrol car and green [for Gomez Aguilon] but you have a situation where, again, officers are responding to a call for assistance,” Shea said.

The speeding cop was en route to help a colleague nab Joshua Silvers, who was trying to evade arrest after speeding 75 mph down the Clearview Expressway near Northern Blvd. in Queens, authorities said.

Silvers, 23, initially stopped for police, but then hit the gas on his black Mercedes Benz and zoomed away over the Throgs Neck Bridge into the Bronx, police said.

Silvers was zipping in and out of traffic over 100 mph before cops caught up and charged him with reckless endangerment, unlawfully fleeing a police officer and driving on a suspended license.

The officer who struck Gomez Aguilon was about seven miles from the bridge when he crashed into the young woman, police said.
