A series of lucky breaks helped police bust a man accused of trying to rape an 85-year-old woman in the laundry room of her Brooklyn apartment building, law enforcement sources said Friday.

Mario Pope, 25, was charged attempted rape, burglary, sex abuse, forcible touching and unlawful imprisonment, hours after he accosted his elderly victim inside her Marine Ave. building near 94th St. in Bay Ridge, police said.

The elderly woman said Pope followed her into the laundry room around 9:30 a.m. Thursday and tried to rape her, said police.

He suddenly got spooked and ran off, leaving his victim rattled but unharmed.

For whatever reason, the woman didn’t call 911 until more than an hour later, at around 10:44 a.m., said police sources. She was taken to NYU Langone-Brooklyn
