Prez goes to church, Biden appeals to ‘soul of the nation’ in bids to win over key states

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and President Trump hit the road Sunday in bids to flip key states.

Biden gave his stump speech focusing on voter turnout in Durham, N.C.

“We’re working hard and we’re competing like we never did before because so much is at stake for this nation,” he was quoted as saying by CNN. “The very soul of the nation is at stake. Folks, as my coach used to say in college, it’s go time. It’s the most important election in our lifetimes.”

He was addressing people who stayed in their cars at the drive-in-style rally. The last time North Carolina went for a Democratic presidential candidate was in 2008, when voters there helped see Barack Obama to victory.

“Without North Carolina, it’s very hard to imagine Donald Trump winning,” Biden’s campaign manager Jennifer O’Malley Dillon was quoted as saying last week by The New York Times.

Biden started the day with his usual Sunday routine of Catholic Mass at St. Joseph on the Brandywine in his home state of Delaware.

Trump, who’s rarely to be seen at a house of worship, made for a megachurch in Las Vegas.

Pastor Denise Goulet waxed prophetic to her congregation at the nondenominational International Church of Las Vegas, where Trump sat in the front row.

“At 4:30, the Lord said to me, ‘I am going to give your president a second win,’ ” she said, telling the commander-in-chief, “You will be the president again.”

Trump made brief remarks before dumping a wad of $20 bills in a collection plate.

“I love going to church,” the president claimed. “We are telling you, you better get

out because we have a group on the other side that doesn’t agree with us. … So get out there on Nov. 3 or sooner.”

Nevada has gone to the Democratic candidate in every presidential race since 2004.

On Sunday afternoon, Trump flew to Santa Ana, Calif., for a private fundraiser. His hectic schedule included an evening flight back to Nevada, where he was scheduled to hold a rally in Carson City.

The campaign blitz comes as polls are showing a close race in the homestretch of the presidential campaign.

Biden has slim margins over Trump in the swing states of Arizona and Wisconsin, according to new polls from CBS News and YouGov, bolstering his national lead.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez said his party isn’t taking anything for granted.

“I always caution people, never get on the ‘poll-er coaster,’ ” he said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

“We have a lot more work to do, but we’re competing in battlegrounds.”
