Jets: No wins, no points . . . and no hope

- BY CHARLES MCDONALD

Sunday’s 24-0 loss to the Dolphins might have been the Jets’ worst of the season.

The Jets averaged just 2.9 yards per play in the first half, failed to convert a single third down and allowed three passing touchdowns to Ryan Fitzpatrick before halftime. Gang Green went three-and-out four times within its first six drives of the game.

Joe Flacco tested Breshad Perriman deep down the field early in the game, but both passes fell incomplete and the Jets reverted into a horizontal passing game for much of the first half. The Jets defense showed life with big sacks by Bryce Huff and Tarell Basham and an interception by Brian Poole, but the Dolphins still managed to score with ease prior to halftime.

The Jets failed to score or convert a third down in the third quarter as well. The Jets were in scoring range at one point, but an intentional grounding on Flacco forced the Jets to try a 55-yard field goal, which Sam Ficken missed.

“It was ugly,” Flacco said. “We didn’t play well and they came after us and we just weren’t able to get a lot going.”

Miami struggled on third down as well, failing to convert a third down throughout the first three quarters. However, the Dolphins were able to do enough on first, second and fourth down to put points on the board.

The Jets’ first third down conversion of the day came with 10 minutes left in the game, but Flacco ended up taking a 28-yard sack later in the drive that resulted in a punt. Marcus Maye made a ridiculous interception that he caught off his back during the fourth quarter, but the Jets offense was unable to capitalize.

“I don’t feel good right now because we didn’t win the football game and we didn’t play well enough,” Flacco said. “But I’m happy about how the guys that were in there at the end of the game fought and kept going.”

Rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa made his NFL debut right before the two minute warning. He completed his first pass to running back Patrick Laird.

This was the Jets second shutout loss under Adam Gase, the last coming in the infamous 33-0 loss to the Patriots last year that produced the “seeing ghosts” line from Sam Darnold.

“We just never put anything together consistently,” Gase said. “We haven’t done anything well this year at all.”
