Gov: Biden’s gonna win, suits will fail

- BY DENIS SLATTERY

ALBANY — Gov. Cuomo isn’t surprised that President Trump and Joe Biden are locked in a tight race, but said Thursday he’s banking on a Biden win.

The governor, who backed the fellow Democrat’s White House bid, shared his thoughts on the drawn-out election results during an interview with WAMC’s Alan Chartock.

“This is a divided nation, we knew it was going to be a close election,” Cuomo said. “You look at the votes, it looks like Joe Biden is going to win.”

“He’s going to win; feel good,” he added.

The governor went on to pan the president’s plans to sue in several states that have yet to be called for either candidate as election officials count absentee and mail-in ballots.

“Trump is suing. No kidding. Just listen to him. He’s been saying this for weeks,” Cuomo said.

The Trump campaign filed several legal challenges in states such as Pennsylvania, Georgia and Michigan in an attempt to stop ballots from being counted.

Should any of the lawsuits make it to the Supreme Court, Cuomo is confident that they would not overturn any results.

They’re not going to flush their total integrity,” he said. “I believe that, and there would be anarchy.”

The governor also said he anticipates a potential Biden administration would open the door to a new coronavirus aid package that would include financial support for state and local governments that have been ravaged by the crisis.

He feels the former vice president would offer a guiding hand to help the Democrat-controlled House and potentially Republican Senate come to an agreement.

“Biden is by definition collegial and unifying, and that’s going to make all the difference,” Cuomo said.

Congress has failed to pass an aid package for months as the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on local economies and devastated state revenues. Republicans, especially Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), have said they are unwilling to support a “blue state bailout.”

Cuomo said all states are suffering.

“Even the Republican states need help,” he said.
