About Stanton is if he can stay healthy

key,’’ Cashman said. “It’s not questioning whether the New York scene is a scene for him or not because it felt like he was gonna hit a home run every game in the postseason against elite pitching. That’s what he seemed to be doing.”

Keeping Stanton and the rest of the Yankees healthy was the motivation for the Yankees reorganizing their medical and strength and conditioning programs last winter. There was no noticeable improvement under celebrity trainer Eric Cressey this year, although Cashman said that was expected, as results would only be seen after a full year in the 2021 season.

Stanton began 2020 with a calf injury that likely would have kept him from the Opening Day roster if the season had not been delayed by the pandemic. He was ready for the late July delayed opener, setting expectations with a home run in his first at-bat.

He was hitting .293/.453/.585 with three homers when he went down with a tight hamstring on Aug. 8.

Stanton missed the next 32 games on the injured list, returning to hit .200/.300/.400 in the last nine games.

But there were adjustments made to Stanton’s regime during that stretch that give Aaron Boone confidence that he can remain healthy. Even though Stanton has been predominantly a designated hitter the last two seasons, Boone said this week he is healthy enough for the Yankees to consider playing him in the outfield occasionally.

“I definitely think he can be healthy and I think he showed you at the end of the year that he was very healthy,” Boone said on MLB

Network radio. “And probably at the end of the year could have gone out and play the outfield. Matter of fact, some of the work pregame work he was doing in the playoffs in the outfield. It was our strength and conditioning staff and training staff and me and the coaching staff who’s like, man, he’s all the way back the way he’s moving in the outfield, so I certainly think it’s in there for him to do it.

“The question is how comfortable will I be to do it on a regular basis,” Boone added. “Obviously we see how impactful he is when he’s when he’s in the lineup and. And so I see a ton of DH for him. How much does he gets back out of the field?

“He’s certainly capable of it, but we also want to make sure that he’s posting as much as possible too.”

Giancarlo Stanton has proven he’s a good fit thanks to his postseason performance, but not he has to be able to stay on field.
