Christians must depart Trump
Danvers, Mass.: I have been listening to Christian radio for a couple of months now and it is quite revealing. Every single segment for the weeks leading up to the election revolved around abortion, traditional family values and Donald Trump’s commitment to the evangelical movement. Through this medium, the evangelicals tried mobilizing, organizing, raising and spending money in a tremendous effort to keep Trump in office. Along the way you can hear Mike Pence and Lindsey Graham as they buddied up with evangelical leaders to discuss the evil motivations of the radical, communist, godless, baby-killing left.
I went to seminary with these folks, worshiped with them, pastored to them and loved them, but they have removed Christ from all forms of the political evangelical movement. There is one unforgivable sin in the Bible, which is to blaspheme the Holy Spirit. I feel that is exactly what is happening with the evangelical right-wing political movement. It is unforgivable because they can never see their own sin. They are trapped by their own righteousness, but through reform, many can still be saved.
It is time to put aside the hypocrisy of the “Moral Majority” and return the God vote to where it belongs. This country’s religious leaders are supposed to fight for the middle class and the working poor and to provide a genuine opportunity for all to achieve the American dream. This country and the church have fallen short of that promise. There is no liberty if people have no chance to provide for their families.
